Osteoporosis is often referred to as a “silent disease” because it usually does not cause any symptoms until a bone breaks. However, some warning signs include:
• Back pain
• Loss of height over time
• A stooped posture
• Bone fractures that occur more easily than expected
Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the loss of old bone. This can happen due to a variety of reasons, including:
• Age: Most patients are 30-60 years old
• Heredity: A person is prone to osteoporosis if the condition is present in family history
• Gender: Women are more affected than men
• Race: Caucasian and Asian women are more prone to osteoporosis.
• Low body weight/bone mass weight: shorter people are at greater risk of Osteoporosis.
The goal of osteoporosis treatment is to prevent bone fractures by slowing down or stopping bone loss and increasing bone density. Treatment options include:
• Medications: Bisphosphonates, denosumab, and teriparatide are some of the medications that are commonly used to treat osteoporosis.
• Lifestyle changes: Regular exercise, a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can help prevent and manage osteoporosis.
• Surgery: In rare cases, surgery may be necessary to treat bone fractures caused by osteoporosis
